Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (fresh or panko preferred)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Bacon and Beef: Fry the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, then remove and drain on paper towels. In the same skillet with the bacon fat, add the ground beef and cook until browned and no longer pink, breaking it apart with a spoon. Add the chopped onions to the beef and cook until soft and translucent.
  2. Mix the Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the cooked ground beef and onions with the crumbled bacon, BBQ sauce, eggs, milk, and shredded cheddar cheese. Stir well to ensure all ingredients are evenly mixed and coated.
  3. Assemble the Casserole: Grease a baking dish, then transfer the mixture into it and spread evenly. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the top to form a crunchy crust.
  4. Bake Until Golden and Bubbling: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the casserole in the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, the top is golden brown, and the casserole is heated through.
  5. Let it Rest Before Serving: Remove the casserole from the oven and let it sit for about 5 minutes. This resting period helps the casserole firm up, making it easier to cut into portions and serve.

Notes

  • Use thick-cut bacon for extra smoky flavor and texture.
  • Do not overcook the ground beef; cook just until no longer pink to keep it juicy.
  • Allow the casserole to rest after baking to help it set for easier serving.
  • For an extra cheesy top, sprinkle additional cheddar cheese before baking.
  • Fresh or panko breadcrumbs provide a better crunch on top compared to pre-packaged crumbs.
