Classic Steak Pizzaiola

Classic Steak Pizzaiola

Classic Steak Pizzaiola is a quick and flavorful Italian dish featuring tender steak simmered in a rich tomato sauce infused with garlic, oregano, and a hint of red pepper. Perfect for busy weeknights, it combines simplicity with bold, savory flavors and pairs wonderfully with pasta, crusty bread, or salad.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 lb tender steak (sirloin or ribeye)

Sauce

  • 3 cloves fresh garlic, minced
  • 1 cup high-quality canned tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil, divided
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Garnish

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped

Instructions

  1. Prepare and Season the Steak: Pat the steak dry with paper towels for a good sear. Season both sides generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  2. Sear the Steak: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering. Add the steak and sear for 2-3 minutes per side until nicely browned but not fully cooked. Remove the steak and set aside.
  3. Sauté Garlic and Build Flavor: Lower the heat to medium and add remaining olive oil if needed. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 30 seconds until fragrant, avoiding burning. Add dried oregano and crushed red pepper flakes to toast and enhance their aroma.
  4. Add Tomato Sauce: Pour in the tomato sauce and stir to combine with the garlic and herbs. Let the sauce simmer gently for a few minutes to thicken and develop flavor.
  5. Simmer the Steak in Sauce: Return the steak to the skillet, nestling it into the tomato sauce. Cover and simmer on low heat for 5-7 minutes until the steak reaches desired doneness and absorbs the sauce flavor.
  6. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle fresh chopped parsley over the steak and sauce. Serve hot with your favorite side dishes and enjoy.

Notes

  • Choose tender steak cuts like sirloin or ribeye for best results.
  • Sauté garlic just until fragrant to prevent bitterness.
  • Use high-quality tomato sauce for a richer flavor and smooth texture.
  • Allow the steak to rest after cooking to retain juices.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to suit your preferred spice level.
