Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie

Old-Fashioned Buttermilk Pie is a creamy, custard-like Southern dessert featuring a smooth, tangy filling made from simple pantry staples and buttermilk. This nostalgic pie offers a velvety texture and sweet, slightly caramelized top, perfect for any occasion or gathering.

Ingredients

Scale

Pie Crust

  • 1 pre-made or homemade 9-inch pie crust

Filling

  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the crust: Fit your 9-inch pie crust into a pie dish and crimp the edges to your liking. Chill the crust in the refrigerator while preparing the filling to help it stay crisp during baking. For best results, blind bake the crust for 10 minutes at 350°F (175°C) before adding the filling.
  2. Mix the filling: In a large bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, all-purpose flour, melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract until smooth. Slowly add the buttermilk while continuing to whisk, ensuring the mixture is fully combined without lumps. Fold in lemon zest if using.
  3. Pour and bake: Carefully pour the filling into the prepared pie crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the top is golden and the custard has set but still jiggles slightly in the center.
  4. Cool and serve: Allow the pie to cool completely on a wire rack, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before slicing to let the filling firm up and deepen the flavors.

Notes

  • Use room temperature eggs for smoother filling texture.
  • The pie should have a slight jiggle in the center when done; it will set further as it cools.
  • Blind bake the crust for 10 minutes to prevent sogginess.
  • Use fresh buttermilk for optimal tang and custard consistency.
  • Chill the pie fully before slicing to prevent cracks and enhance flavor melding.
